The New Azure – More Productivity with Less Pain
Presented by Michael Collier
5/12/2015 5:45 PM
Cleveland Microsoft Office

If there is one constant in the public cloud, it is change. The Microsoft Azure platform has seen tremendous growth the 5 years since the platform became commercially available. The platform now includes a wealth of services for developers, data scientists, and IT Pros. Many of the new innovations center around allowing developers to be more productive with platform services – writing only the code that needs to be written. In this session we will explore several of the new platform services that allow you to create, deploy, and manage both basic and high scale cloud hosted solutions. This session will primarily focus on Azure updates since BUILD and Ignite, specifically as related to services such as Azure App Services, DocumentDB, Service Fabric, and Azure Resource Manager.

Michael Collier joined Microsoft in January 2015 and is currently a Cloud Solution Architect on the SMS&P team. Michael is a former five-time Azure MVP and recently served in prominent Azure architecture positions with Aditi Technologies and Neudesic. Michael has over 13 years of experience with various consulting and technology firms where he was instrumental in leading and developing solutions for a wide range of clients. He has a vast amount of experience in helping companies determine the best strategy for adopting cloud computing, and providing the insight and hands-on experience to ensure they are successful. Michael is also a respected technology community leader, and is often found sharing his Microsoft Azure insights and experiences at regional and national conferences. Michael is also the co-author of a recently published book on Microsoft Azure entitled Microsoft Azure Essentials: Fundamentals of Azure.

Columbus SharePoint Roundtable: The End-User Guide to SharePoint & Office365
Presented by Jason Ditzel & Ricardo Wilkins
4/30/2015 2:00 PM
Columbus Microsoft Office

Bring your End-Users to this talk, as we take a lap around the collaboration opportunities that exist when we combine SharePoint, the Office suite, and Office 365. While teams will often choose SharePoint and Office as their tools of choice, they many times underutilize certain features and integration points that they don’t realize are there. With each iteration of these toolsets, Microsoft continues to enhance the end-user capabilities of the products, and expand the many types of tasks for which the products are useful.

In this talk, we’ll take a look at the main Office products with the strongest SharePoint integration – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. We’ll also explore ways to empower end-users through connections to external business data, and maximizing usage of intranet portals. Finally, we’ll explore many of the very new features being added to Office365 to augment the collaboration experience for the end-user.

Microsoft Azure Hybrid Cloud: Bring Internet Scale to Your LOB Apps
Presented by Richard Broida
4/14/2015 5:45 PM
Cleveland Microsoft Office

Getting maximum value from LOB assets often requires integrating them with other systems in your enterprise, your partners’ enterprises, and/or the cloud. Building integration solutions from scratch can be a difficult task, while traditional EAI platforms can be costly investments. With Microsoft Azure you can build hybrid solutions that keep your essential LOB assets on premise while moving specialized functionality to the cloud to take advantage of high capacity, scalability and availability. At the same time, Azure provides a rich and growing assortment of services to connect with partners and SaaS suppliers.

But where to begin? This session will demonstrate creating secure, reliable integration workflows using publically available Azure services including Service Bus, Cloud Services and Azure BizTalk Service. Starting from a completely on premise scenario, we will proceed step by step to integrate a hypothetical LOB system with messaging, computing and storage services in the cloud. We’ll demonstrate best practices for development, testing and deployment, as well as managing costs and monitoring results. Whatever your level of cloud experience, we hope you’ll come away with solid ideas for using the cloud to get more value from your technology investments.

Richard Broida is the Connected Systems Practice Director at Bennett Adelson. A member of Microsoft’s Azure V-TSP program, Richard has helped clients build integration solutions in a variety of industries including manufacturing, healthcare, retail and finance.

Windows Azure WebJobs: Amp-Up Your Web Sites
Presented by James Raden
1/13/2015 5:45 PM
Cleveland Microsoft Office

Successful web sites increasingly need to provide users with dynamic and responsive experiences. Javascript and SignalR can help on the client side, but if the server must pause to fetch, compute or transmit data, the user’s experience can still grind to a halt. A popular solution is to move bottleneck tasks to an asynchronous background process, but that requires extra development work using standard web frameworks like ASP.NET.

WebJobs are a new feature that enables Windows Azure web sites to run programs and scripts in the background, either continuously, on demand or on a schedule. WebJobs provide a lightweight, simple alternative to worker roles for such tasks as background computations, fetching external data, and message postings.

James Raden, a Bennett Adelson Senior Consultant in the Connected Systems practice, will introduce you to the benefits of WebJobs and demonstrate how easily you can write, test and deploy them with the latest SDK and Visual Studio tooling.

Oswald is currently using the program to help manage the annual service and renewal activities for hundreds of their group benefits clients. Oswald will also show how they plan to utilize PSA in other departments, taking advantage of the resource management and utilization functionality.

Technical Academy

Are you frustrated with managing option set values in CRM? Does the change in DEV, test in QA, deploy to production seem a bit cumbersome when you just need to add another option? One “option” (pardon the pun) is to work with a little slight-of-hand. Give your options an entity base. With a little coding and UI design your option sets can render as option sets (drop lists) to the user, but your data administrators can add options to the system with the ease of adding a record. Come see how.

JavaScript & CSS in SharePoint – Lessons Learned from the Field
Presented by Ricardo Wilkins
10/22/2014 2:00 PM

JavaScript has been an important technology in web development, and also plays a significant part in the SharePoint platform. While JavaScript has often been used to ‘force’ certain enhancements into the UI, it has since been incorporated more formally through the client side object model. With all the different options, iterations, and libraries available, it’s important to understand the best ways to use it correctly, and how to identify when to use it as well.

In this talk, we’ll discuss many aspects of JavaScript development in SharePoint that Ricardo learned while working with various clients on SharePoint projects. We’ll give some introduction to JavaScript, jQuery, CSS and SharePoint, and also discuss the tools available. Finally, we’ll cover 4 distinct Lessons Learned, and how they can play into your overall SharePoint project.

Which Cloud is best for me? What is OSLO?
Presented by Mario Fulan & Ricardo Wilkins
9/18/2014 5:30 PM
Columbus Microsoft Office

Which “cloud” is best for me for my hosted SharePoint solution: Microsoft Office 365 or Microsoft Azure IaaS?

We’ll discuss the differences and similarities between SharePoint Online in Microsoft Office 365 and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) in Microsoft Azure for hosting my SharePoint sites “in the cloud”. How do I choose the best solution for my business and what are the key factors to consider when making a decision?

What is “codename OSLO” and how will it change enterprise search?

The enterprise search experience is fantastic in SharePoint but is about to go through a major reformation. Codename OSLO was announced at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference SPC2014 and promises to personalize search and discovery of content to make them more relevant and personal for everyone. On July 9th, Microsoft announced Delve as the official name for codename OSLO. We will do an introduction to Delve and discuss the capabilities that it will bring to users to surface information in new ways and to bring information to the user rather than wait for users to seek information through the standard textual search interface. Delve enables exciting new ways to discover information and to work together and is the first of a new breed of intelligent work experiences.

In order to be successful mobile marketers in 2014, companies and big brands must stay ahead of the curve by delivering content in concise and seamless mobile experiences. In this session, we will review a user-centric mindset to mobile solution design and how to deliver best-in-class user experience by matching user needs and limitations to business goals and objectives. We will demonstrate how user experience and development teams collaborate to design and build a mobile app that meets the requirements for cross-platform, multi-device deployment (including Windows Phone and Store apps). We will discuss the process (and pros and cons) of selecting the tools and the setup for building a hybrid mobile application.

5/29/2013 5:45 PM
Park Center III - Lower Level
We’ll continue working on the problem of how to analyze packets of network data. Last month we saw how to use the open source WireShark utility to capture network data in XML format, and we used F#’s language features and System.XML to map the data into a stream of F# records. This month we’ll enhance the F# data structures and develop some algorithms for discovering patterns.

About F# SIG
The Cleveland F# Programmers Special Interest Group (F# SIG) is for programmers who work in and/or are interested in learning the F# language. F# is Microsoft's entry in the fast-growing world of functional programming. Compared to other programming languages F# code is often simpler and more intuitive, yet like any language it takes some time and practice to learn F#. The F# SIG gives programmers at all skill levels a monthly opportunity to learn about the language and how others are using it, improve their skills and share their knowledge in a relaxed, cooperative environment . The group meetings consist of mini-presentations by members, group programming exercises, and informal discussions. The audience ranges from F# experts to those developers that are getting their first glimpse of F#.

F#’s Game Changer: Functional Data Types
Presented by Richard Broida &
Mike Falanga
3/28/2013 5:45 PM
Park Center II
In F# it’s easy to combine diverse kinds of data into light-weight static types called Discriminated Unions. These types are easy to declare and easy to use with functional techniques like pattern matching and recursion. In many cases functional programs with Discriminated Unions are easier to write and maintain than comparable OOP programs would be. In this session we’ll explore how to apply Discriminated Unions to challenging domains like logic programming and data mining.

Asynchronous Programming with C#, VB.NET and F#
Presented by Richard Broida
Bennett Adelson
3/12/2013 5:45 PM
Park Center II
Much of the recent innovation in .NET involves making it easier to write asynchronous programs. You don’t need to write asynchronous callbacks or thread synchronizations anymore. The Task Parallel Library in C#/VB, and asynchronous workflows in F# let you write safe, correct asynchronous code almost as easily as synchronous code. But with new power comes old responsibilities: when is asynchronous programming appropriate, and which technique is best for your particular problem? Principal Consultant Richard Broida from Bennett Adelson will review the current async technologies and demonstrate how functional programming makes the job easier.

7/10/2012 5:45 PM
Cleveland Microsoft Office
Take your current web development skills to the mobile world! Write an application using HTML5 + a mobile framework like jQuery Mobile or Sencha Touch 2 that will be supported across multiple mobile devices. If desired, you can also build & package your application using a utility called PhoneGap so that it can be deployed as a native application across multiple devices. You can even utilize PhoneGap’s APIs so your app can access various native features on mobile phones (ex. – Geolocation, Contacts, Camera, Local Database Storage, etc.). By the end of the night, walk away with the code for two sample applications that you can experiment with and deploy to any approved, provisioned mobile device.

We’ll discuss the following features of mobile web development, illustrating many of them through demos and code walkthroughs:
  • The 5 "Levels" of Mobile Development
  • CSS3 Media Queries
  • Mobile Web Frameworks: jQuery Mobile, Sencha Touch 2, Kendo UI
  • Ripple Extension for Chrome (for testing your HTML5 mobile apps)

F# Over C#
Presented by Mike Falanga
6/28/2012 5:45 PM
Park Center III - Lower Level
Have you wondered when or why you might use F# over C#? Mike has a problem that he solved recently using functional techniques. This problem could have been solved in an object-oriented way, but not quite as simply. Come see the difference. Afterwards, we can work on the F# Koans or solve some Project Euler problems.

About F# SIG
The Cleveland F# Programmers Special Interest Group (F# SIG) is for programmers who work in and/or are interested in learning the F# language. F# is Microsoft's entry in the fast-growing world of functional programming. In this interactive session, we will spend a few minutes to introduce the concepts of Software Craftsmanship. Then we will go through some exercises (Katas) using simple problems to help work on things like “SOLID”, “DRY”, Test Driven Development (TDD) and Pair Programming. Please bring a laptop if possible for exercises! Why do Katas? Don’t we get enough time in code as it is? Kata is an attempt to bring the element of practice to software development. A kata is an exercise in karate where you repeat a form many, many times, making little improvements in each. The intent behind kata with software development is similar. We’ve all heard the statement “Practice makes Perfect”. But when it comes to software development, it’s more accurate to say “Practice makes Permanent”. If we, in our day jobs, repeat less than ideal approaches then eventually those approaches become habit. Much like a musician or athlete takes time to practice drills or scales, Katas give us programmers a chance to improve our programming skills. This session will be lots of fun with good interaction between attendees! There will be pizza and refreshments for the event and raffles done at the end to kick-start everyone into the holiday spirit.

Programming with Complex Data Structures in F#
    Presented by Richard Broida
    10/11/2011 5:45 PM
    Cleveland Microsoft Office
In today’s service-oriented, cloud-based computing, data’s not as simple or stable as it used to be. A statically-typed functional programming language like F# has unique advantages for handling data whose source, structure and meaning can change dynamically. In this presentation we’ll look at features of F# in Visual Studio 2010 that enable dynamic discovery and manipulation of complex data. We’ll also explore the new Type Provider feature coming in Visual Studio 11, which allows conversion of external, dynamic data sources to static types with compile-time safety and IDE support for “Intellisense”-style completion. No F# experience is required, but programmers interested in learning the language are invited to join our new F# Programming SIG meeting on the 4th Thursday of the month.
